The reach of the OMB in Ottawa

I've been doing a fair bit of thinking about the Ontario Municpal Board in recent weeks. That's partly because I've been following a few cases and because of the move in Toronto to take back some of the OMB's authority.

So I've been cruising through the 294 open or recently closed Ottawa cases listed on the OMB website and that got me wondering if a map wouldn't help visualize the actual reach of the OMB in Ottawa and its potential impact on planning and development.

So ta-da here is a quick and dirty version of the 200 or so cases that include one or more specific addresses:

If you click on the markers you'll notice I've included OMB case numbers. The status of the case is available here for the truly curious. You'll need to copy and paste the case number.

This is how it looks filtered for open cases:

There are 53 mapped cases. Keep in mind these only represent cases that concern one or more specific street addresses. There are many more challenges to bylaws, the Official Plan and so on that aren't connected to specific addresses (and are more significant in many ways).

Here is the same map filtered for recent cases that are closed (a "recent" case may go back several years):

The OMB really does touch almost every part of the city.

THANK YOU TO OPENFILE OTTAWA WHO WERE KIND ENOUGH TO PURCHASE AND REPOST THIS BLOG ENTRY HERE.
